Brush Hog Treasure Hunt

There’s a certain luck to Vashon Island, beyond the calming views and tranquil pace. It’s in the unexpected discoveries, the connections with long-time residents, and the sense of community that permeates everything. This past weekend, that magic manifested itself in a very specific, very heavy, and very well-maintained form: a 48" brush hog attachment.
I’d been on the hunt for a good used brush hog for my tractor for a while. New ones are a hefty investment, and I appreciate the sustainability of giving pre-loved equipment a new life. So, as I drove past a particularly immaculate property on the north end of the island, my eye caught a "For Sale" sign tucked discreetly beside a chunky piece of farm machinery.

It was a 48" brush hog, exactly the size I needed. But what truly stood out was the heavy cast iron, old school design. I met the owner – a long-time Vashon resident, whose property was a testament to his dedication. His yard was meticulously manicured, his outbuildings tidy, and a faint scent of freshly cut wood hung in the air. We chatted for a while, about the island, about tractors, and about the brush hog itself. He explained its history, its maintenance, and why he was letting it go (he already had two flail mowers). There was a clear sense of satisfaction in his voice.
The transaction was straightforward, the price fair, and the whole experience was a reminder of what makes Vashon so special. It’s not just about the scenic drives or the charming coffee shops; it’s about the people who live here, their stewardship of the land, and the quiet integrity you often find in the most unexpected places.
So, if you see me out on homestead, making short work of some overgrown blackberries, you’ll know the story behind that chunky but functioning attachment. It’s more than just a piece of farm equipment; it’s a little slice of Vashon luck, found right on the side of the road.
