Dreaming in Green: Cultivating Hope on Our Vashon Homestead

The air on our little slice of Vashon Island is thick with the scent of damp earth and… well, let's be honest, a whole lot of decaying wood. Right now, our "homestead" looks less like a pastoral dream and more like a lumberjack's graveyard swallowed by aggressive blackberries. Fallen giants lie scattered like pick-up sticks, skeletal remains of dead trees reach for the sky, and stubborn stumps stand sentinel over a landscape currently dominated by thorny invaders.
And yet… and yet! Despite the present reality of tangled vines and decaying timber, a vibrant optimism blossoms within us. As we navigate the uneven terrain, dodging rogue brambles and stepping over moss-covered logs, our minds are painting a different picture altogether.

We see beyond the current chaos, envisioning a future brimming with life and tranquility.
Imagine, if you will, sunlight dappling through the leaves of a burgeoning orchard. The crisp snap of a freshly picked apple, the sweet perfume of pear blossoms in the spring, the juicy burst of a ripe plum. We wander through rows of fruit trees, each one a testament to patience and the promise of future harvests.
Close your eyes and you can almost hear the gentle murmur of a pond, reflecting the sky and the surrounding greenery. Dragonflies dance on its surface, and perhaps a chorus of frogs provides a soothing evening serenade. This will be a haven for wildlife, a source of peaceful contemplation, and maybe even a spot for a refreshing dip on a hot summer day.
And then there are the bees. The gentle hum of their industry filling the air as they flit from blossom to blossom, diligently collecting nectar. We picture our own hives, contributing to the pollination of our orchard and gardens, and rewarding us with golden, fragrant honey – a true taste of our island life.

Nestled amongst this burgeoning landscape, we envision a modest but undeniably comfortable modern house. Picture walls of windows, inviting the lush forest views inside, blurring the lines between our living space and the natural world. Sunlight streams in, illuminating clean lines and natural materials. It’s a space designed for both cozy evenings by a crackling fire and bright mornings filled with the sounds of nature. A sanctuary built with intention, a place where we can truly relax and connect with the beauty that surrounds us.
Yes, the work ahead is significant. There will be sweat, sore muscles, and undoubtedly a few frustrating encounters with those tenacious blackberries. But the joy lies in the envisioning, in the shared dream of what this land can become. Each fallen tree we clear, each stump we unearth, each patch of blackberries we conquer brings us one step closer to realizing that vision.
This blog isn't just about clearing land with a tractor; it's about cultivating hope. It's about planting seeds – both literally and figuratively – for a future where we are deeply connected to the land, nourished by its bounty, and living in harmony with the natural rhythms of Vashon Island. The journey may be challenging, but the destination, even in its nascent form in our minds, is already breathtaking. And that, my friends, is a powerful reason to be optimistic.
