Spring on Vashon Island is synonymous with blooming peonies, and a recent visit to one of our beautiful local peony farms brought a surprise beyond the vibrant blossoms. Proudly displayed amongst rows of budding plants, I spotted something that truly piqued my interest: a newer Kubota tractor, complete with a flail mower, proudly displaying a "For Sale" sign!
Now, for anyone who appreciates the work that goes into maintaining these stunning fields, seeing a well-maintained piece of farm machinery like this is a moment of pure possibility. A Kubota, known for its reliability and versatility, paired with a flail mower – that's a serious workhorse ready to tackle everything from overgrown pastures to orchard maintenance, and of course, keeping those peony beds tidy in the off-season.
It got me thinking about the lifecycle of farm equipment and the continuous evolution of our local farms. Perhaps this tractor served its purpose beautifully and is now ready for a new home and new challenges. Or maybe the farm is upgrading, expanding, or simply re-evaluating its needs.
Regardless of the reason, it's always fascinating to see these tools of the trade up close.  ​Well, our weirdly named farm-hand, the SDLanch IRET13 Electric Tricycle, is officially in service! Our very first day with the trike was a real baptism by fire, and I’ve already got a mountain of insights to share. ​While this little electric dump-bed is destined to spend its life happily motoring back and forth along one specific narrow path on Vashon Island, we had a major challenge just getting it there: a long trek across the full length of Vashon Island. This trip quickly revealed the trike's strengths and, well, its limits. ​Power vs. Physics: Handling the hills ​I imagine the trike was primarily designed for flat, dense urban areas or factory floors. In that environment, it would be a champion.
